Dr Peter A. L. Masawe is a Crop Improvement, Production and Propagation Specialist. with an extensive experience in cashew.  He is currently a Technical Advisor to the Cashew Development Project, under the Ministry of Food and Agriculture in Ghana.  The Cashew Development Project is funded by African Development Bank (AfDB) and the Government of Ghana.  Before taking AfDB assignment in April 2006, Dr Peter Masawe was a Coordinator of the Regional Cashew Improvement Network for Eastern and Southern Africa which is funded by Common Fund for Commodities based in Amsterdam.  The regional network covers seven countries which are Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania and Uganda.  During this period, he was also the Lead Scientist for the National Cashew Research Programme and Head of the Cashew Breeding Department at Naliendele Agricultural Research Institute in Mtwara, Tanzania. 

His remarkable achievements in cashew research and development earned him world recognition resulting into two years World Bank assignment as cashew specialist in Mozambique (2000-2002) to assist in reviving cashew production as well as initiation of the National Cashew Research Programme.

Dr Masawe has been involved in cashew research and development for twenty years and has extended his activities to Mozambique, Madagascar, Uganda and Ghana. In cashew improvement, he is one of the most prominent cashew breeders in the world.  He has released twenty cashew varieties, making Tanzania the first country in Africa to develop commercially registered cashew varieties. He is also an author of the book "Tanzanian Cashew Cultivars" which was published in February 2006; (ISBN 9987-446-01-9.
Dr Masawe worked with Cashew Improvement Programme Tanzania (As National Cashew Coordinator) which was jointly funded by the Government of Tanzania, the World Bank and British Overseas Development Administration (ODA) now Department of International Development (DFID) for six years (1990-1996).  During this period and under his leadership, a lot of technologies in cashew (breeding, pathology, crop protection, agronomy, vegetative propagation and biotechnology) were developed and disseminated.  The cashew research programme also developed Integrated Cashew Management Programme (ICMP), which is a participatory method of dissemination of cashew research outputs to farmers.  ICMP is currently being implemented in Eastern and Southern African countries.  The ICMP contributed in increasing cashewnut production in Tanzania from 16,000 tons in 1986/87 season to over 100,000 tons in recent years.

He has done several assignments with the United Nations Universities in Finland, The World Bank, Centre de Coopération Internationale en Recherche Agronomique pour Devéloppement (CIRAD), The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA-Mozambique), Australian Government Overseas Aid Program (AUSAID) supporting ADRA Mozambique, Development Aid from People to People (ADPP Mozambaique), Common Fund for Commodities (CFC), TechnoServe (Ghana), governments, public and private institutions, private companies, several NGOs and individuals.

Dr Peter Masawe has over 30 publications in cashew and he has been engaged in international consultancies for over 15 years now.  Apart from being actively involved in administration and international consultancies, he still finds time to carry out research on cashew.
