Cashew Concern Certification

There is a rapidly moving trend towards certification programs that certify to the consumer that the product he/she is buying is made according to globally accepted labor standards, is not detrimental to the environment, is pesticide free, is not genetically modified, etc. This trend is largely being driven by consumers and in turn by responsive retailers who have noticed that consumers are willing to pay more for products that fulfill certification requirements

Certification by Cashew Concern will be based on each processor’s adherence to globally accepted labor standards, cleanliness, etc., can provide a means of demonstrating that the cashews and the conditions under which they are processed meet globally recognized criteria.  An African company certified by the CCC would be ranked with the best facilities in any cashew processing region.

The CCC was founded by David Rosenthal, who has been involved in cashew importing for the past 16 years. There is also a “Give Back’ program which would provide funds for projects to benefit communities who depend on cashew processing. Status of Ghana Cashew Industry

In recent years the interest for the crop has grown and this is evidenced by the growth of demand for cashew seed nut for planting which has increased from about 1 MT in 1994 annually to about 10 MT in 2007 annually.
As at 2006, estimated area under cultivation was about 59,000 ha with annual production of about 16,000MT of raw cashew nuts. An estimated 3.24 million ha of suitable land is available for cashew cultivation in the country. Cashew takes 2 – 3 years to produce economic crop. Area under cultivation is projected at 65,000 hectares by 2020 with a projected domestic production of47,000 MT. The standard practice is to inter-crop with crops such as maize, millet, sorghum, yam, cassava, soybean, groundnuts or chillies until the canopy closes.
As at 2007, estimated area under cultivation was about 60,000ha with an annual production of about 22,000MT of raw cashew nuts. Excess volumes recorded in exports are as a result of some cross border trade from Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso. For more...
